Low Profile of R. Stevie Moore: Improviser, composer, arranger, producer, musical conceptualist, comedy writer, vocal stylist, filmmaker, sketchpad artist, drama example, self-taught instrumentalist and bon vivant, R. Stevie Moore was born 1952 in Nashville, TN to famed Elvis bass player, Bob. Since '66, RSM has recorded nearly 2,000 songs on over 400 very original homemade albums of alarmingly idiosyncratic variety and styles, often considered a seminal pioneer in the DIY ethic. Remaining virtually unknown, he quietly resided in New Jersey as a curator of his own museum. Until now... based back in Tennessee. and RETIRED.

R. Stevie Moore has collaborated with artists such as Ariel Pink, Jason Falkner, and Lane Steinberg. The Wire's Matthew Ingram argued that "[h]is echoes can be heard in the music of artists like Pavement, Smog, Guided By Voices and Beck, and through his disciple Ariel Pink, he has unwittingly provided the template for the entire movement currently known as Hypnagogic Pop."

As of this year, masterful genre-defying pop songsmith and home recording legend R. Stevie Moore has been releasing albums for five full decades. Afterlife, a collection of newer recordings of songs from across his vast catalog, is as compelling and distinctive as anything he’s made so far. This is also the year that Cool Daddio, Imogen Putler and Monika Baran’s long-awaited documentary film about Moore, finally began to get out into the world, with screenings including an October showing at the Nashville Film Festival.

Stationed in a nest of equipment and instruments is DIY recording figurehead R. Stevie Moore, sporting a large, white beard and thick glasses. There is a lot of emphasis on "do" in the DIY term for him, with over 400 self-released albums since the mid '70s. Part of this work mentality perhaps came from his father, Bob Moore, a Nashville session musician who was featured on countless country and early rock recordings. R. Stevie witnessed a massive quantity of recording early on in his life and later went on to produce his own impressive volume of work.
