Depression Breakfast is a Riot Grrrl punk band from Nashville, TN. Since 2017, the 4-piece has been protesting capitalism, Nazis and annoying lo-fi art boys through their fiery live show. Recently named “Best Riot Grrrl Revival” band in the Nashville Scene, they take “progressive fury and focus it into a crackling laser of feminist punk righteousness.”

Just Because I'm A Womxn

The band, founded in 2017, was recently named “Best Riot Grrrl Revival” band in the Nashville scene. They take “progressive fury and focus it into a crackling laser of feminist punk righteousness.” Their bandcamp bio urges us to “OVERTHROW COCKROCK AND IDOLIZE YOUR GIRLFRIEND.” If that doesn’t entice you, then I honestly don’t know what will.

Rest in power, Depression Breakfast. The sensational punk quartet disbanded in August, but fortunately for us, they left behind an album that captures the cathartic rage of their live shows. The band responds both to our sociopolitical moment and its greater context by taking swings at oversensitive art boys, critiquing victim-blaming culture and more.

They announced themselves last year with a demo ep and then last week they released their debut album, Just Because I'm A Womxn. It also looks as though it could be their swansong as they appear to have split up due to vocalist Meg moving out of the country. To paraphrase the recent Rotten Foxes ep, they arrived, raised hell and left. The album boasts 8 short, sharp blasts of punky noise railing against the establishment and the patriarchy. It's a sonic kick in the balls. It's a blast.

Over the past year-and-change, riot grrrl-inspired four-piece Depression Breakfast has been an energizing force and, to paraphrase a comment from local rock promoter Ryan Sweeney in our 2018 Rock ’n’ Roll Poll, it's a voice a lot of people needed to hear. At a time when it feels like every traditional source of information is muddled and has to be taken with a handful of salt, their intense music is clear and direct in its messages.
